Buoy Ten: Chinook and coho mayhem!

The Columbia River salmon runs never cease to amaze me.
The individual size of the chinook and coho, their sheer numbers and willingness to bite keep me coming back year after year!

Our first full day resulted in boat limits of chinook and coho and my buddy Phil Michelsen helps me hoist our catch

KING 5 News Anchor Greg Copeland joined us and was rewarded with a nice chinook and coho limit!

The largest fish of the trip (so far) is Phil Michelsen's beautiful 36 pound hog!

I've always wanted to fish Buoy 10. But never done it before. Is 19ft C-Dory seaworthy enough to fish in Buoy 10?

Do you need down-riggers or just simple setup like agitator flasher, 8oz lead and use spinners or herring.

What's the current/flow like during outgoing tide and incoming tide?

It seems like lot of fun, but also pretty chaotic.

Are there plenty of boat launches and parking?

What kind of numbers are you seeing getting caught? I was there Saturday and it was slow compared to buoy 10 standards.

A 19 ft boat is big enough, you'll see all kinds of boats down there. Fish flash and spinners/herring setups and my experience is at least 16 oz cannonball or delta diver, sometimes 20 oz. You must keep you lines close to your boat, there could be a thousand boats trolling around you (no joke). Illwaco, chinook, Astoria, and deep river all have launches. Probably more. Get there early it's busier than anywhere I've ever seen.

I've seen a lot smaller boats than a 19' at Buoy 10. You should be fine, just watch the weather!

Current velocities are only a bit more than you'll find in Puget Sound and there are ramps in Chinook, Washington, Astoria and Warrenton, Oregon
